About the story....

This tale unfolds in the little town of Waverly, Pennsylvania, where a thirty-two-year-old recluse is about to fall out of a window into a most extraordinary fate.

The strange events are triggered when an angel of death visits the Malones under their backyard chestnut tree and whisks away Atlas Malone, former hardware store owner and husband of Gracie. The next day Gracie demands that the undertaker bury her man in his favorite work shirt and Hush Puppies. When the undertaker balks, she brings up an old scandal about dead bodies and chipped ice-all's fair in love and funerals. Eavesdropping on this blackmail threat is her son Louis, a man who hasn't left their house in sixteen years. His reason: a secret he conceals under a purple scarf wrapped beneath his nose and a Pirates baseball cap pulled down to his eyes. The town calls him the "monster of Waverly." He is the man in the window.

Across town, widower and retired car mechanic Arnie Shula believes he's going senile and sying by bits and pieces. Yet, even in his dotage, Arnie can see that his daughter Iris, a nurse, is simply one of the homeliest women in the world. Iris knows it, too. At thirty-seven, she only knowsit is unlikely her Prince Charming will ever appear. But she is about to learn how wrong she is. Her prince's name is Louis, and he just fell out of a window and into her life.

Gradually what seems like an accident becomes tinged with purpose.
