About the story:
Victor Maitland stood as a giant among modern American artists. His paintings were acclaimed by the critics, collected by museums, hoarded by the rich. Joyous nudes, they were a celebration of existence, the outpouring of an enormously talented individual driven to savor life in all its fullness and to capture it on canvas in flaming color.
Yet to those who knew the man beneath the artist's smock, Victor Maitland was a twisted human being,, one who betrayed his wife, scorned his son, seduced his models, and repelled all who tried to befriend him. When Maitland's body was discovered in his lonely studio, face down in a pool of blood, the victim of a savage knife attack, there were few among his family, friends, and associates who mourned his passing, while many stood to profit by it.
The reputation of the New York Police Department and pressure from Maitland's brother-in-law, a state Senator, demanded an early arrest. But in a crime without clues or witnesses, normal police investigation failed to uncover any firm leads. So it was that ex-Chief of Detectives Edward X. Delaney, a man of legendary stature in the Department, was lured out of retirement to supervise the case.
To Delaney this was no random killing, but a coolly premeditated act, born of avarice and corruption in the art world. The solution of the homicide lay not so much in external evidence (of which there was little) but in the personalities of the victim and those closest to him. As Delaney and his assistant, Detective Sergeant Abner Boone, probed more deeply into the tangled web of the artist's affairs, they found that intense greed was a motive shared by all the suspects:
*His wife, who condemned her husband's sensuality
*His son, whose love-hate relationship inspired acts of violence
*His agent, who worshipped the artist and despised the man
*His mistress, who made a career of exploiting the talents and weaknesses of others
*His mother and sister, who dreamed of a world of luxury
*His closest friend, who envied Maitland's genius
All these, and others, played their parts in the puzzle of the artist's murder. Adding to the mystery were a number of seemingly unanswerable questions:
*What was the source of the drugs found in the dead artist's studio?
*Who modeled for Maitland's final sketches?
*Why had he left no completed paintings?
*Who has visited the artist in the hour before his death?
